The "Someday" Degree is a Lie: Why Waiting to Upskill is the Most Expensive Career Mistake You're Making

My dear student,

Let’s talk about a word I hear all the time from bright, hardworking people like you. That word is “Someday.”

“Someday, when I have time, I’ll get that degree.”
“Someday, when things settle down, I’ll study further.”

It sounds so reasonable, doesn’t it? But today, I want to share a lesson that isn’t in any textbook: “Someday” is a lie we tell ourselves to feel better about inaction. And this lie is more than just a delay—it’s the most expensive mistake of your career.

Let me explain this simply, with a story you’ll recognize.

The Story of Two Friends: Anil and Sunil

Imagine two friends, Anil and Sunil. They both work in an office, doing similar jobs, earning ₹40,000 a month.

  • Anil thinks, “I need an MBA to become a manager. But I’m too busy. I’ll do it someday.” He continues his routine.

  • Sunil also feels busy, but he thinks, “If I wait for the perfect time, it will never come.” He enrolls in an online, part-time MBA program. It’s tough. He studies on weekends and after work. But he manages.

Fast forward three years.

Anil is still in the same role. With inflation, his salary has only increased a little, to maybe ₹45,000 a month. He’s frustrated but still waiting for "someday."

Sunil has just completed his MBA. He gets promoted to Manager. His salary jumps to ₹70,000 a month.

Now, let’s do the math—the math that most people never do.

The "Missing Money" Calculator

This is the first, and biggest, cost of waiting.

  • Sunil is now earning ₹25,000 more every month than Anil.

  • Over one year, that’s ₹3,00,000 more.

  • By the time Anil finally decides to start his degree, Sunil has already earned nearly ₹10 lakhs MORE than him, just because he started three years earlier.

Think about that. By waiting for "someday," Anil didn't just delay his promotion. He lost out on a significant amount of money that he will never get back. This is what we call the "opportunity cost"—the real price of waiting.

The "Standing Still" Problem

In today's fast-moving world, standing still is the same as moving backwards.

Imagine you're on a moving walkway at the airport. If you stand still, you still move forward. But if everyone around you is walking, they are pulling ahead.

Your career is the same. While you are waiting, your colleagues and competitors are upskilling. They are learning about:

  • Artificial Intelligence

  • Digital Marketing

  • Data Analysis

  • Modern Management

When a new project or promotion comes up, who do you think the boss will choose? The person who has the new skills, or the one who has been waiting?

The "Confidence Gap"

This is a cost you can't measure in rupees, but it might be the most important one.

Every day you wait, you might be feeling a small, quiet doubt: "Am I good enough for that promotion?" This doubt holds you back from speaking up in meetings, from applying for that better job.

Getting a degree does more than just add a line to your resume. It fills you with knowledge and confidence. It gives you the proof that you are capable. You walk differently. You talk with more authority. This confidence often opens doors even before you finish the degree.

The Solution: Learning That Fits Your Life

I know what you’re thinking. “Professor, I’m not lazy. I just don’t have the time! I have a job, a family, responsibilities.”

And you are absolutely right. This is why the old way of thinking about education is broken. You cannot be expected to quit your job and go back to college.

But the system has changed. This is the most important part of our lesson today.

With online and part-time degrees, you don’t have to put your life on hold.

Think of it like this:

  • Your classroom is your laptop. You can learn from your living room.

  • Your class time is whenever you are free. Early in the morning, late at night, during your lunch break.

  • You can "Earn While You Learn." Your salary pays for your degree, and you can immediately use what you learn to do better in your current job.

You are not waiting for a seat in a classroom. You are creating a classroom around your life.

Your Homework for a Better Future

Your assignment today is simple. Ask yourself one question:

“What will my life look like in three years if I continue to wait?”

Now, ask a second question:
“What could my life look like in three years if I start a flexible degree now?”

The difference between those two answers is the true cost of "Someday."

Don’t let "Someday" be the reason you look back with regret. The perfect time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is today.
