I need to confess something.

After 15 years in HR, sitting on both sides of the interview table, I’ve come to a frustrating, heartbreaking conclusion: Our hiring system is broken. Not just a little cracked, but fundamentally flawed in a way that fails everyone.

I’ve seen it time and again. A hiring manager, a good person with a critical team gap, spends evenings sifting through a mountain of 500 resumes. They’re not looking for a perfect keyword match; they’re desperately searching for a spark—for someone who can solve problems, fit their culture, and help the team thrive. They end up exhausted, cynical, and no closer to a solution.

At the very same time, I’ve spoken with a candidate—a talented, passionate individual who has spent weeks meticulously tailoring their cover letter, researching the company, and dreaming about how they could contribute. They hit "submit," and their application disappears into a digital black hole. Not even a rejection email. Just silence. Their confidence, once high, begins to erode into doubt. "Am I not good enough?"

This, my friends, is The Great Mismatch. And it’s costing us more than just time and money; it’s costing us human potential.

The View from My Desk: A Tale of Two Frustrations

To the Employer I work with:

I see you. I know the pressure you’re under. That open req is more than a line on a spreadsheet; it’s a team that’s overworked, a project that’s stalled, and a goal you’re at risk of missing. You begin to question your worth, and the world feels impersonal and cold.

This Great Mismatch exists because we’ve let technology and process overshadow the most important element: the human being.

Algorithms can filter for keywords, but they can’t sense passion. They can scan for years of experience, but they can’t measure potential. They can’t see the glimmer in a candidate’s eye when they talk about their craft, or hear the genuine excitement in a hiring manager’s voice when they describe their company’s mission.

This is the fire that still burns within me. This is why I do what I do.
